Rationale Statement for Courage
As I stated in my introduction letter, teaching requires courage. Howard Good describes courage as a skill that can be taught to our students and must be taught if we expect them to apply what they learn in new and unexpected situations. As an educator, I must be able to model courage for my students by taking an active role in promoting my beliefs about education and the abilities of my students. I believe that all students can learn and that I need to have the courage to help them develop their skills in ways that are most effective for their individual needs. The INTASC standards that I particularly feel embody the need for a teacher to demonstrate courage are Standards #4 and #5. Again, the ability to teach takes courage and all the standards do require some level of courage. In the reflective pieces for the evidence provided I have explained why standards #4 and #5 would require a great deal of courage and how I have demonstrated that courage. I have also noted which of the Alverno Educator Abilities I have utilized.
