Rationale Statement for Home
As Dorothy said in The Wizard of Oz film, "There's no place like home." In order to create a community of learners students must feel at home in our classroom. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to insure all the students I come in contact with feel a sense of safety and belonging. Vygotsky also believed that students must be able to trust those who are teaching them. To create a sense of home, a teacher must realize that her classroom is not made up of students who are disconnected from their world around them, but who are very much a part of many complex and interrelated communities. As teachers, we must respect the roles that each child's community plays in their life and acknowledge the impact those communities can have on them. Only when we demonstrate respect and acknowledgement of the influences on each student can we begin to develop a classroom community.
Howard Good describes what effect a sense of home, in other words a sense of belonging, or lack thereof can have on student learning. "Alienation from school can take other forms than chronic absenteeism. It has been associated with academic failure, sexual promiscuity, and substance abuse" (Good, p. 83.) With this in mind, it is clear to me the importance of creating a sense of home and belonging in the classroom. The INTASC teacher standards that I connect to this idea of home are Standards #8, #9 and #10. The evidence that I have provided reflects these standards as well as various Alverno Education Abilities.
